Red Bull faces F1 driver headache after academy talent surge

Former IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe has highlighted Red Bull's shift from driver shortages to an excess of promising talent in its Formula 1 pipeline during the 2026 season.

Hinchcliffe spoke on the F1 Nation podcast alongside Jolyon Palmer and host Tom Clarkson. He noted the strong showings by several Red Bull-affiliated drivers this year.

Racing Bulls sits in a close contest with Alpine for fifth in the constructors' standings. Liam Lawson and rookie Arvid Lindblad have drawn attention with their results, while Isack Hadjar has impressed alongside Max Verstappen at the senior Red Bull team.

Junior driver Nikola Tsolov leads the Formula 2 championship. Hinchcliffe pointed out the limited number of seats available across the grid.

"There's only 22 seats, right? You can't always just assume that the F2 champ gets the promotion," he said. He contrasted the current situation with conditions 12 months earlier, when the team struggled to fill its lineups.
