Rennae Stubbs called Paula Badosa's racket throw during the Iasi Open semi-finals an absolute disgrace. The former Serena Williams coach urged automatic disqualification for such actions in the future. Badosa won the match but later retired in the final.
Rennae Stubbs said on The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast that Badosa should have been defaulted immediately after the racket left her hand during the semi-final against Tamara Zidansek.
Stubbs stated that players must take responsibility once they release the racket, regardless of intent or outcome. She argued this rule change is the only way to stop similar incidents.
Badosa threw the racket after missing an overhead smash but avoided hitting spectators and completed a comeback to win the match. She later faced Mayar Sherif in the final, took two medical timeouts for a left leg issue, and retired while trailing in the second set.
The runner-up finish lifted Badosa to world No. 93 and secured direct entry to the US Open. She next plays Katarzyna Kawa at the Bitpanda Hamburg Open.
