Robert Smith criticizes Chris Martin World Cup halftime show

The Cure frontman Robert Smith has expanded on his blunt criticism of the upcoming FIFA World Cup final halftime show curated by Coldplay's Chris Martin.

Smith posted on The Cure's official Instagram account on July 16, taking aim at FIFA President Gianni Infantino for describing the event as a groundbreaking spectacle. He signed off with the phrase please just fuck off along with hashtags including breadandcircuses and mugwank.

In a follow-up post, Smith clarified that his frustration centered on the concept of a halftime show at the World Cup final rather than the specific performers. He referenced Infantino's plans to hand over the trophy alongside US President Trump on Sunday.

The 11-minute set is scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. It will feature Madonna, Justin Bieber, Shakira and BTS and aims to raise funds for the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund.
