Rafael Devers waved off manager Tony Vitello during a recent loss to the Miami Marlins when asked to exit for a pinch runner. The incident occurred late in a one-run game in the ninth inning.
Devers later apologized to Vitello during a conversation on the team plane. He stated he initially believed the move stemmed from concerns over his hamstring rather than game strategy. Similar past episodes occurred during his time with the Boston Red Sox.
Posey has faced criticism for roster construction and communication. The team acquired power hitters including Willy Adames and Matt Chapman, yet San Francisco ranks tied for 10th-lowest in home runs with 86 while playing in a pitcher-friendly park.
Adames is batting .225 with 14 home runs, Chapman has a .381 slugging percentage, and Devers is at .235 with 12 home runs. The Aug. 3 trade deadline approaches with several players potentially available.
