Sokoto police arrest suspected Sai Malam cult members

The Sokoto State Police Command has arrested three suspected members of the Sai Malam cult group, including their alleged leader. The operation uncovered a WhatsApp channel used for recruiting youths into criminal activities. Authorities are urging parents to monitor their children's online interactions.

On Friday, the Sokoto State Police Command's Anti-Kidnapping Unit conducted an intelligence-led operation that resulted in the arrest of three individuals linked to the notorious Sai Malam cult group. This group has been associated with increasing criminal activities across parts of the state. Among the suspects is Usman Shu’aibu, identified as the alleged gang leader.

DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, the Police Public Relations Officer, revealed that the suspects confessed to their initiation into the group via a private WhatsApp platform named Red Chamber. Investigations showed that this channel was established specifically to recruit vulnerable youths into various illicit practices, including ritual activities, the seeking of demonic powers, homosexuality, and violent thuggery.

The police emphasized the growing trend of criminal organizations using digital platforms to target unsuspecting young people. In response, they have issued a strong warning to parents and guardians to closely supervise their children's online activities to prevent such exploitations.

Commissioner of Police Ahmed Musa stated that these arrests address public concerns regarding the cult's operations. He noted that ongoing efforts are focused on apprehending other members who remain at large. Musa reaffirmed the command's dedication to intelligence-driven policing aimed at protecting lives and property throughout the state.
