The Pittsburgh Steelers moved up in the draft to select wide receiver Germie Bernard in the second round. Analysts now see him developing into a reliable contributor similar to former Green Bay Packers receiver Randall Cobb.
Steelers beat writer Ray Fittipaldo said this week that Bernard could carve out a role as a rookie contributor. He compared the receiver to Randall Cobb, noting his ability to work the short and intermediate parts of the field along with strong run-after-catch skills.
Fittipaldo added that the connection with quarterback Aaron Rodgers would likely develop over time rather than in early September. He pointed to Bernard’s agility, route-running intelligence, and blocking ability as assets that should help him earn playing time in offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy’s system.
Roman Wilson remains an option at wide receiver but has not yet secured a defined role. Bernard’s skill set is viewed as one of the quicker ones from this draft class to adapt to NFL play.
