Stockholm introduces SL discount for healthcare workers from new year

Region Stockholm is introducing a 25 percent discount on SL cards for all healthcare employees from the turn of the year. Due to technical reasons, the discount initially applies only to 90-day and annual passes, but politicians are working to include monthly tickets. This is part of the 2026 budget aimed at improving conditions for healthcare staff.

In a response to a letter from nurse Anna Lindén, Green Party traffic councilor Jakob Dalunde and Left Party opposition councilor Anna Sehlin explain that the priority has been to implement the discount as soon as possible. They have collaborated with the center coalition to shape Region Stockholm's 2026 budget, emphasizing that healthcare staff are the most important resource and deserve good working conditions.

Since taking over governance, the number of nursing assistants, doctors, and nurses has increased by nearly 3,000. For 2026, further measures are planned to strengthen incentives to work in the region, including 5,000 SEK in wellness benefits for full-time employees and free work shoes for all healthcare staff. The 25 percent SL discount is funded by 200 million SEK and targets all Region Stockholm employees.

Despite technical hurdles, the discount could not be implemented for monthly passes in the first step, but Dalunde and Sehlin share Lindén's view and are actively working to resolve this. The background is the welfare system's toughest economic crisis in 30 years, where the region has protected healthcare from layoffs and hired thousands of new staff. Now it's time to give back, especially after the staff's efforts during the pandemic. There is still much left to do to support healthcare's heroes.

Health minister Elisabeth Lann (KD) describes the high sick leave in the healthcare sector as a failure and is now calling a crisis meeting with unions and employers. Sick leave is highest in female-dominated professions such as care, elderly care, and school, with three out of four stress-related illnesses affecting women, according to the Swedish Social Insurance Agency's report.

Starting in 2026, several new laws will impact household finances in Sweden. Reduced VAT on food and dance events, a strengthened job tax deduction, and changes to dental care and mortgages are among the examples. These rules aim to ease economic burdens for many.

Immigrant labor is shouldering an ever-larger share of Sweden's welfare system, especially in elderly care. A report from Sweden's Municipalities and Regions (SKR) shows a sharp rise in foreign-born municipal and regional employees over the past decade. The proportion has increased from 13 to 22 percent in municipalities and from 14 to 20 percent in regions.

Sweden's Work Environment Authority has sharply criticized Region Gävleborg for an inadequate work environment investigation following the murder of ambulance worker Helena Löfgren in Harmånger. The agency demands a new, more concrete probe by February 23, or faces fines. Meanwhile, prosecutors are appealing the sentence against perpetrator Liam Hast to seek life imprisonment instead of 18 years.

Japanese Finance and Health Ministers have agreed to raise the core portion of medical service fees by 3% or more for the first time in 30 years. This measure aims to help hospitals manage rising prices and boost wages for medical workers. Fees will increase by 2.22% in fiscal 2026.

Several signs point to a brighter labor market in Sweden. The job placement organization TSL reports a clear decrease in laid-off workers seeking help, and it is becoming easier to find new jobs.
