Taxi services have resumed in KwaNdengezi west of Durban after a suspension that started on Thursday. The pause followed police impounding more than 20 taxis over allegations of attacks on an e-hailing driver and intimidation of passengers.
The suspension began after incidents allegedly involving security guards linked to local taxi operators. Taxi owners stopped services and demanded the return of their impounded vehicles. Mathula Mkhize, SANTACO Durban West Regional Chairperson, confirmed that operations restarted on Saturday. Discussions are continuing to address remaining issues. “As SANTACO we want to apologise for an unfortunate incident that took place at KwaNdengezi between the security company for the association, e-hailers and passengers. After that meeting we did conclude by re-opening the operation. So as from yesterday, the taxi operation is back at KwaNdengezi and we plea to anyone who was interrupted by the unfortunate incident to understand our apology,” Mkhize said.
