Two American troops died Saturday in an Iranian strike on Jordan, according to U.S. Central Command. A third service member is still missing following the attack.
The deaths are the first confirmed U.S. fatalities linked to Iranian attacks on Jordan this week. Four additional American troops were treated at Jordanian hospitals after the strike and have since been released.
CENTCOM confirmed it destroyed an Iranian surveillance tower at Chah Bahar Shahid Kalantari Port on July 16. Officials said the strike reduced the IRGC’s capacity to coordinate attacks on civilian vessels.
Iran has also struck targets in Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain in recent days. Kuwait reported damage to a power and desalination plant, while a child in Qatar was hurt by shrapnel.
The escalation follows Iran’s decision to abandon an interim peace agreement with the United States. President Donald Trump stated on July 14 that negotiations require military strength.
