A Utah enthusiast has transformed a 1987 Toyota Hilux pickup truck by replacing its original gasoline engine with a Tesla Model 3 motor, dramatically boosting its performance. The project, documented by YouTuber Electric Supercar, turned the classic vehicle into a high-acceleration electric vehicle while retaining its retro exterior.
The modification began with the complete removal of the Hilux's inline-four internal-combustion engine. In its place, the team installed a Tesla Model 3 drive unit, along with custom battery packs, EV electronics, electric power steering, a custom cooling system, and an onboard charger. This overhaul aimed to explore the potential performance of the aging truck under electric power.
Initial tests focused on slower speeds and recharging capabilities. The real excitement came during acceleration trials. With the original gasoline setup, the 1987 Hilux took 13.23 seconds to reach 60 mph from a standstill. The electric upgrade slashed this time to 5.66 seconds, while hitting 30 mph took just over two seconds. These figures highlight a shift from utilitarian pickup to sports-car-like responsiveness.
Outwardly, the truck remains unchanged, preserving the appearance of a standard 1980s Toyota factory model. The project evolved over several months, starting as a simple experiment but resulting in a fully functional retro electric vehicle. Electric Supercar shared the build process on his YouTube channel, showcasing the integration challenges and outcomes.
This build demonstrates the adaptability of Tesla components in non-electric vehicles, offering enthusiasts a blend of vintage aesthetics and modern electric performance. While the truck's powertrain has been revolutionized, its core identity as a rugged Hilux endures.
