Valve announced the prices for its Steam Machine on June 22, with the base 512GB model costing $1049.

The device comes in four configurations. The 512GB version starts at $1049, while the 2TB model costs $1349. Bundles including the Steam Controller add $79 to $79 respectively.

Valve described the Steam Machine as an extension of PC gaming rather than a console. It will not subsidize hardware prices to maintain an open ecosystem, the company said.

The high cost stems from a RAM and storage shortage driven by AI data center demand. Valve noted the original target price was significantly lower, around $750.

Reservations opened June 22 and close June 25. Shipping begins after June 29 via a randomized waitlist system.

Users expressed skepticism over the $1049 price tag, comparing it unfavorably to PS5 Pro and PCs, noting AI-driven cost increases and questioning sales potential; some highlighted it was originally planned cheaper.

Rumors suggest Valve's upcoming Steam Machine could start at $1,000 or higher, raising worries among gamers already facing rising costs.

Valve's new Steam Controller, successor to the 2015 model and inspired by Steam Deck prototypes, launches May 4 for $99 in the US ($149 CAD, €99 EU, £85 UK, A$149 AU, 419 PLN PL). Featuring dual touchpads, TMR thumbsticks, and a wireless Puck dongle, it offers precise PC gaming while escaping hardware delays affecting Steam Machine and Frame.

Following its November 2025 announcement and March 2026 reaffirmation, Valve's facilities have received large shipments of gaming consoles from China, signaling progress toward the Steam Machine's launch before the end of 2026. Logistics records verified by The Verge show multiple containers arriving in late April and early May.

Retailers have listed Lenovo's Legion Go 2 PC gaming handheld at significantly higher prices, with the base model now at $1,500 and the higher-end version at $2,000. The increases, spotted by Videocardz, mark a 48 percent jump from previous prices of $1,100 and $1,350. The changes come amid a reported RAM shortage affecting the market.

Valve has announced it will release the Steam Controller next month, ahead of the Steam Machine, in response to an ongoing RAM shortage crisis. The controller lacks RAM, simplifying its production. The company originally saw no need to ship the devices together.
