YouTuber builds $950 DIY Steam Machine to rival Valve's leaked pricing

Following leaks suggesting Valve's Steam Machine could cost around $950, YouTuber Zac Builds has created a custom PC mimicking the device at that exact price. Using off-the-shelf parts, it delivers strong high-end gaming performance. Valve still has not officially confirmed pricing or specs.

In response to earlier third-party retailer leaks indicating a 512GB Steam Machine at approximately $950 USD, YouTuber Zac Builds constructed a DIY version for precisely that amount, aiming to prove it could be cheaper, faster, and better than Valve's anticipated hybrid console, as first covered by PC Gamer.

The build specs include a Ryzen 5 5600X CPU, Radeon RX 9060 XT GPU with 16GB VRAM, 16GB DDR4 RAM, and a 2TB SSD—all housed in a custom 3D-printed case with wood paneling. Slightly larger than Valve's expected footprint, it leverages discounted parts for the $950 total (enclosure included), though Valve's bulk production could lower official costs.

Performance tests showed it running Cyberpunk 2077 and Spider-Man 2 at up to 60 FPS in 4K with FSR upscaling, exceeding typical expectations for the price point. This DIY project highlights community excitement amid Valve's silence on official pricing, shipping, and full specs since the January leaks.
