Victoria Mboko reaches Doha final with win over Ostapenko

Victoria Mboko defeated Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals of the Qatar TotalEnergies Open, securing her top 10 debut and a spot in the final against Karolina Muchova. The 19-year-old Canadian has now reached her second WTA 1000 final this season. The championship match is set for Saturday in Doha.

Victoria Mboko's rapid rise continued at the Qatar TotalEnergies Open in Doha, where the 19-year-old Canadian advanced to the singles final with a straight-sets victory over Jelena Ostapenko. Mboko, seeded No. 10, won 6-3, 6-2 in 74 minutes, tallying 15 winners including six aces against 15 unforced errors. Ostapenko recorded 22 winners but committed 27 unforced errors during the match on Center Court at the Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex.

This marks Mboko's fourth WTA final and second at the 1000 level, following her title win at the National Bank Open in Montreal last year. She began 2025 ranked No. 333 and has since claimed titles in Montreal and Hong Kong, while reaching the final in Adelaide earlier this season, where she lost to Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 6-1. Mboko's path to the final included defeats of Marie Bouzkova 7-5, 6-2, Vera Zvonareva 6-4, 6-4, Andreeva 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5), Elena Rybakina 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, and Ostapenko. Her semifinal win guarantees a top 10 debut in the PIF WTA Rankings on Monday, making her the fourth Canadian woman to achieve this, after Carling Bassett-Seguso, Eugenie Bouchard, and Bianca Andreescu. A title would elevate her to No. 9; a loss would place her at No. 10.

Mboko will face Karolina Muchova, who advanced by defeating Maria Sakkari 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the other semifinal. Muchova, seeking her second WTA title since the 2019 Korea Open, reached her seventh career final and third at WTA 1000 level. Her Doha run featured wins over Jaquelina Cristian 6-2, 6-3, Tereza Valentova 6-1, 6-4, Karolina Pliskova 5-2 ret., Anna Kalinskaya 6-3, 6-4, and Sakkari. This will be the first meeting between Mboko and Muchova on the WTA Tour.

The final is scheduled for Saturday, not before 6 p.m. local time (3 p.m. GMT), as a best-of-three tiebreak sets match. The champion earns $665,000 and 1,000 ranking points; the finalist receives $385,001 and 650 points. Mboko reflected on her progress, saying, "It's kind of crazy... it's a nice feeling." Muchova noted of her opponent, "She's playing incredible... it's going to be a very tough battle."
