Vijes and Yumbo officials request stronger police presence

At a zonal security meeting in Valle del Cauca, officials from Vijes and Yumbo requested bolstered Police and Fiscalía presence to tackle local crime. Led by the Gobernación, the gathering agreed on technical tables to address criminal structures and enhance justice. Municipalities like Jamundí also seek greater institutional support.

The Zonal Security and Coexistence Meeting, held on April 23, 2026, in the Cali metropolitan area, brought together local authorities from municipalities under the Policía Metropolitana de Cali. Guillermo Londoño, the department's secretary of Coexistence and Citizen Security, stated that closed technical tables were agreed upon to address criminal structures in Yumbo and strengthen Immediate Reaction Units (URI) in Vijes.

Diana Jiménez, Vijes' government secretary, underscored the importance of these dialogues for smaller municipalities. She noted that no homicides have occurred in 2026 and crime has dropped 40%, though challenges remain in coexistence and microtrafficking.

Plans were also made to bolster institutional presence in Jamundí and Yumbo, affecting Vijes and La Cumbre. Retired Colonel Javier Garcés, Cali's secretary of Security and Justice, stressed inter-agency coordination. The event included high-ranking Police, Army, Aerospace Force, and Fiscalía officials, with mentions of investments in radios and anti-drone systems funded by the Security Rate.

The goal, per Londoño, is to not only increase troop numbers but also improve justice administration.
