Wandayi urges ODM to discipline Sifuna amid escalating leadership tensions

Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi has called for disciplinary action against ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna for disrespecting party leaders, speaking in Rarieda on January 2, 2026. This follows Oburu Oginga's recent unity pleas and comes amid debates over potential alliances with President Ruto's UDA.

Building on party leader Dr Oburu Oginga's December calls for unity amid internal rifts, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi urged the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to discipline Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and other officials for public disrespect toward leadership.

Speaking in Rarieda Constituency on January 2, 2026, Wandayi emphasized that senior figures like Sifuna must uphold discipline and avoid undermining the party. “If you are a party leader occupying the position of Secretary General, you must respect fellow leaders,” he said.

Wandayi also appealed to Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo, ODM vice chairperson, to help address the indiscipline. Amollo affirmed confidence in Oburu's leadership, post-Raila Odinga, and pledged party unity for upcoming elections.

The push follows Sifuna's criticisms alleging ODM alignment with President William Ruto's camp. On December 31, 2025, Oburu announced ODM would decide by end-2026 on partnering with UDA or running independently, positioning himself as presidential candidate if solo. Any UDA alliance would hinge on fulfilling a prior 10-point agenda and MOU.

Building on party leader Oburu Oginga's recent call for unity, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) MPs have urged him to address worsening tensions, including Secretary General Edwin Sifuna's clash with MP Junet Mohamed over election funds and a gun incident involving MPs Babu Owino and MCA Robert Alai.

In the wake of his recent vow to chart ODM's direction by June 2026, party leader Dr Oburu Oginga says internal divisions are troubling his leadership and urges unity amid debates over alliances and the 2027 elections. Key figures include Ruth Odinga, Opiyo Wandayi, and Edwin Sifuna.

More tensions are anticipated among various factions of the ODM party following statements from its leader Dr. Oburu Oginga about plans to provide direction in June 2026. This relates to calculations for the 2027 elections. Figures such as Edwin Sifuna, Governor James Orengo, and Minister Opiyo Wandayi appear central to this discord.

Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has issued an ultimatum to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), threatening to leave the party if it continues its alliance with President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA). He set March 9, 2026, as his deadline, warning that his departure could reshape Kenyan politics. The threat highlights deepening internal divisions in ODM following Raila Odinga's death.

Amid ongoing rifts in the Odinga family and ODM since Raila Odinga's death, party leader Oburu Oginga Odinga has outlined plans for a February 1 meeting to address discord sparked by President Ruto's appointment of Mama Ida Odinga as UNEP ambassador, with dissent from Raila Odinga Jr. and Winnie Odinga.

Coastal political leaders have begun pressuring Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho to assume the leadership of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party following Raila Odinga's death. This emerged during celebrations marking Odinga's 81st birthday in Kikambala, Kilifi County. Politicians warned they would pursue a different political path if Joho is not given the position.
