Ruling party wins landslide in local elections despite Seoul loss

South Korea's ruling Democratic Party secured 12 of 16 major local posts in June 3 elections. The main opposition retained Seoul with Oh Se-hoon winning a fifth term. Ballot shortages disrupted voting in parts of the capital.
Rival parties continued to clash on May 4 over the ruling Democratic Party's (DP) push for a special counsel bill to probe alleged evidence fabrication by the prosecution under the previous Yoon Suk Yeol administration. The bill targets 12 ongoing cases, including eight linked to President Lee Jae Myung. The main opposition People Power Party (PPP) denounced it as an unconstitutional bid to shield Lee.

The People Power Party nominated supreme council member Yang Hyang-ja as its candidate for Gyeonggi Province governor on May 2 for the June 3 local elections. Yang, a former Samsung Electronics executive, was elected to the National Assembly in 2020. She will face Democratic Party Rep. Choo Mi-ae.
A special counsel team announced on December 27 that Rep. Kim Gi-hyeon of the main opposition People Power Party and his wife have been indicted without detention for giving a luxury clutch bag to former first lady Kim Keon Hee. The gift was delivered shortly after Kim was elected PPP chairperson in March 2023, allegedly in return for her support in the election. The team could not establish bribery charges against former President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife, referring the case to police for further investigation.

A special counsel team indicted former People Power Party (PPP) floor leader Rep. Choo Kyung-ho without detention on charges related to ousted former President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed martial law bid last December. Choo is accused of blocking party lawmakers from participating in a vote to lift the decree, while former Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn was also indicted for inciting insurrection.
