SMHI expands heat warning for large parts of Götaland

SMHI has expanded its warning for high temperatures in Sweden. A heat wave is expected to hit as early as Friday with temperatures up to 30 degrees.

A yellow warning has been issued for high temperatures in parts of Blekinge and Kalmar counties on Thursday and Friday. Tropical heat is expected this weekend, posing risks to vulnerable groups.

A high-pressure system from the south is expected to bring temperatures above 30 degrees in southeastern Sweden from Thursday, according to SMHI.

Following SMHI's forest fire risk warnings issued Friday, multiple blazes broke out across Sweden on Saturday, May 2. Fires reported in Gothenburg area, Årjäng, Uppsala, and elsewhere, with rescue services deploying aircraft and helicopters amid high risks in Götaland, Svealand, and parts of Norrland.

Nine fires were reported in the Örebro area on Friday. SMHI has now announced an elevated risk for forest fires. Emergency services battled several of the fires throughout the day.

After a long cold spell, warmer temperatures and precipitation are expected in southern Sweden over the weekend. SMHI warns of risks such as slippery roads and frostbite in the north. Meteorologists note a shift from high pressure to low pressure.

SMHI has issued an orange warning for Österlen and yellow for the rest of Skåne ahead of Thursday's snowfall. Trafikverket has mobilized extra resources like tracked vehicles and snowplows to manage the risks. The authority urges motorists to stay home if possible.
