A 27-year-old hiker from Navarra has died on Pico de las Neveras in Panticosa, in the Aragonese Pyrenees, after falling during an excursion. The Guardia Civil recovered her body on Sunday, along with one of her two dogs, which also died. The second dog was not located.
The accident happened on Saturday when the young woman, a resident of Pamplona, set out on a route in the Aragonese Pyrenees. She left her vehicle parked at the Casa Piedra refuge and did not return home, alerting a family member. This person contacted COS Navarra, which informed the Guardia Civil.
The rescue operation was activated immediately. It involved the Greim of Panticosa, the Aerial Unit of Huesca, and a 061 doctor. At 15:10 on Sunday, during a reconnaissance flight, agents located the body on a steep slope of Pico de las Neveras, at 2,890 meters altitude. It showed signs incompatible with life, and one of the dogs lay dead beside her.
Weather conditions complicated the evacuation, with strong gusts of wind. The body was transported to the Panticosa helipad and then to the Huesca Institute of Legal Medicine by funeral services. The second dog remains unlocated.
This incident adds to other rescues in the Aragonese Pyrenees over the weekend, such as aiding a French woman with an ankle fracture or rescuing stranded hikers. With this victim, there are now 24 people who have died this year in Aragón while engaging in outdoor sports activities, underscoring the risks in mountainous areas.
