A woman dies and a baby is evacuated in critical condition after a cayuco reaches El Hierro

A 30-year-old woman died on Wednesday when a cayuco carrying 165 migrants reached La Restinga port in El Hierro. A six-month-old baby suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest and was airlifted to Tenerife.

The cayuco left Gambia on the night of July 12 and spent about ten days at sea. The vessel was spotted by the fishing boat Restinga near Tacorón in the Mar de las Calmas. Maritime Rescue sent the Salvamar Diphda which towed it to port where it docked around 17.00 hours.

Upon disembarking medical teams treated the occupants who were in severe condition from the crossing. The woman did not survive the aftereffects and died on the dock. The baby was resuscitated and airlifted to a hospital in Tenerife.

Fifteen people were hospitalized in total fourteen of them at the Hospital Insular Nuestra Señora de los Reyes in El Hierro. Emergency teams initially declared a man dead who was later found to have vital signs and was stabilized.
