Blackmagic Camera iOS app adds Apple Watch companion

Blackmagic Design has released version 3.3 of its Blackmagic Camera app for iOS, introducing a companion app for Apple Watch. The update allows users to control and monitor iPhone video recording remotely from their wrist. It also enables integration with ATEM Mini switchers for live production.

Blackmagic Design announced the latest update to Blackmagic Camera for iOS on April 16, making the app more versatile for solo creators and broadcasters. The version 3.3 introduces a companion Apple Watch app that connects automatically via Wi-Fi, letting users start and stop recording, adjust zoom, frame rate, shutter speed, white balance, and ISO with taps on their wrist. A live video view aids framing, though the small screen limits precise focus checks, ideal for iPhones mounted on tripods during vlogs or standups. Installation occurs directly through the iPhone, with automatic syncing to the Watch within range. Blackmagic Camera now supports control from ATEM Mini switchers, turning compatible iPhones into live studio cameras. This requires the $420 Blackmagic Camera ProDock for iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max, providing HDMI output, timecode, and USB-C ports. A single HDMI cable connects to the switcher, allowing remote adjustments to settings, recording triggers, focus, and zoom, plus DaVinci primary color correction for matching looks in live production. Additional features include compatibility with Blackmagic's Focus and Zoom Demand controls via USB-C to the ProDock, enabling hands-free operation on tripods. ProRes RAW stabilization and bug fixes round out the update. The app remains a free download from the Apple App Store.
