The creators of Boston Blue once tried to sell a zombie television series but were told networks would not buy the concept. Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis shared the story in an interview with the Television Academy. Their attempt came about a year before AMC picked up The Walking Dead.
Brandon Margolis first wrote a zombie movie script that Sonnier suggested turning into a television project. The pair developed the idea and pitched it across Hollywood.
"We got a ton of meetings around town, and the note was, 'We love this, but you can't put zombies on television. What else do you have?'" Margolis recalled. He later reflected that the rejection was likely personal rather than a general rule against the genre.
After the pitch failed, Sonnier and Margolis moved on to other work. They joined the writing staff of The Blacklist in 2013 and co-created L.A.'s Finest in 2019 before developing Boston Blue. The duo has no current plans to revive the zombie concept.
