Attorneys and family members for Carlitos Ricardo Parias say he is not receiving adequate treatment for injuries sustained when federal agents shot him during an immigration arrest last October.
Parias has been held at the Adelanto Detention Center in California since November. He reports ongoing pain in his left arm along with headaches, fevers and blurry vision.
Medical records reviewed by NPR show Parias received mostly Motrin and gabapentin for months and remained in a sling with no physical therapy completed by May. DHS stated he has seen nurses and an orthopedic surgeon and was given a brace and exercises.
Parias entered the country from Mexico in 2002 and has two U.S.-citizen children. His lawyers have filed a habeas petition seeking his release, which has been pending since February.
Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove has pressed DHS for improved care but says the agency has not delivered the requested physical therapy and medications.
