Cause of Baswedan embankment collapse in Jati Padang

The Baswedan embankment in Jati Padang, South Jakarta, collapsed due to narrowing land around Kali Pulo, causing floods that damaged residents' homes and shops. The incident occurred on October 30, 2025, with water levels reaching 1.5 meters at the worst points. Residents hope local authorities will act quickly to prevent recurrence.

On Thursday, October 30, 2025, heavy rain lashed Jakarta starting at 4:00 p.m. WIB, triggering overflow from Kali Pulo and the collapse of the Baswedan embankment in RT 03/RW 06, Jati Padang subdistrict, Pasar Minggu district, South Jakarta. RW 06 chairman Abdul Kohar explained that the main cause was the narrowing of land around the river, which has gradually reduced the river's diameter over time.

"The river's diameter keeps narrowing because that's the condition of our area, the terrain around Kali Pulo," Abdul Kohar told reporters on Friday. He noted that former DKI Governor Anies Baswedan had inspected the site eight times and agreed with the assessment. Previously, 7.4 hectares of land around Masjid Al Ridwan served as a green corridor, but much has turned into settlements.

The embankment's collapse directly affected residents. Yuni's (38) home and an adjacent shop were destroyed, with walls collapsing to a height of one meter. Yuni's house was just 20 meters from the embankment. The incident happened at 5:30 p.m. WIB, while Yuni was away; only her daughter Naza was home and couldn't save belongings. Chest-high floods submerged clothes, mattresses, fans, and other household items.

"It happened on Thursday (30/10) at 5:30 p.m. My daughter got suspicious because the door was closed. When she opened it, everything was gone," Yuni said. She suspects the damage wasn't from soil erosion but from the strong current of Kali Pulo water. Now, Yuni and her family are sheltering at Mushala Sabili.

Abdul Kohar hopes DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung will address the issue promptly. The DKI Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported 11 RTs still flooded on Friday morning, including five in Jati Padang with 40 cm depths due to high rainfall, Kali PHB overflow, and the embankment breach. The Baswedan embankment, named by residents in tribute, had previously helped curb floods reaching 1.5 meters at the worst spots.
