Opposition party leaders met Thursday at the Socialist Party headquarters to clarify internal controversies and confirm they will file challenges before the Constitutional Tribunal against the government's tax megareform.

The meeting took place around 9:00 a.m. at the Socialist Party headquarters on Paris Street in Santiago. Presidents of progressive parties, Senate committee heads, lawmakers and constitutional lawyers attended.

Participants reaffirmed the decision to challenge before the Constitutional Tribunal the article on tax invariability and the one establishing state-funded compensation for companies whose environmental qualification resolution is rejected. They agreed to draft a joint document ending with the message “Unity, in diversity, for Chile”.

The session also allowed the PPD and PS to explain internal agreements and disputes. PPD president Raúl Soto clarified that the deal struck by three senators with Finance Minister Jorge Quiroz did not represent a party decision. Senator Juan Luis Castro stated there had been no intent to negotiate with the government the decision on the TC.

Legal coordination was assigned to constitutional lawyer Tomás Jordán. The challenges will be filed once the bill completes its passage through the Senate.
