Coco Gauff defeated Solana Sierra 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 in a second-round Wimbledon match on July 1. The American overcame a late deficit and a near-miss with the chair umpire to advance.
Gauff trailed 5-4 in the deciding set and 7-4 in the tie-break before winning six straight points for the victory. She hit five double faults, including one that struck the umpire's chair, but finished with 10 aces and a 78 percent first-serve win rate.
The 22-year-old credited a 2019 win over Venus Williams for motivation during tough moments. She said the earlier match gave her confidence that she could overcome the challenge against Sierra.
Gauff will next play American qualifier Claire Liu in the third round on July 3. The win marks her first grass-court victory in two years.
