The Delhi government plans to award contracts for 16 additional decentralised sewage treatment plants by July to address pollution in the Yamuna River.
An official stated that the tender process for the 16 DSTPs is under way. These plants aim to treat sewage from unauthorised colonies that currently flows untreated into the river. With their addition the total DSTP capacity is expected to reach 170 million gallons per day.
The project forms part of a broader effort to increase Delhi’s overall sewage treatment capacity to 1,500 MGD by 2028. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had directed this target during a meeting last July. The government now aims to complete all 29 DSTPs by January 2028 and the linked sewer networks by June 2028.
Earlier plans for DSTPs date back to 2015 but faced delays over land availability. The number of plants has been adjusted several times and now stands at 29 after reductions under successive governments.
