Deputy Javier Olivares of the PDG suffered a physical assault in the early hours of Sunday in Olmué, Valparaíso region. Lawmakers from various sectors rejected the attack and threats against Jaime Araya.
The incident occurred around 00:30 on Sunday, May 10, at the Club Deportivo Amateur Montevideo headquarters in Olmué. According to the complaint, Olivares was approached by a subject who punched him in the face, while another knocked him down and kicked him. An advisor who tried to help was also injured. Both were taken to Limache Hospital, where minor injuries were diagnosed.
Olivares, through his parliamentary office, announced legal actions and criminal complaints against those responsible. In a statement, he said the attacker shouted “The left always lives” and that the aggressors have police records.
Former presidential candidate Franco Parisi condemned the attack and the death threats received by Deputy Jaime Araya. “One can be very distant from what a deputy thinks, but physically intimidating or death threats do not correspond,” Parisi stated on social media.
Lawmakers from various parties, such as Fabián Ossandón (PDG), Erich Grohs (PNL), Francesca Muñoz (PSC) and Daniel Manouhchehri (PS), agreed in rejecting violence as a political tool and called for preserving dialogue and respect.
