Eli Heidenreich eyes special teams role with Steelers

Rookie running back Eli Heidenreich has identified special teams as his clearest route to securing a spot on the Pittsburgh Steelers roster. The seventh-round pick from Navy has spent his early training camp days working with reserves but has stood out on the punt team.

Heidenreich spoke to reporters after Friday's practice at Saint Vincent’s campus. He said special teams represents his best chance to make the 53-man roster.

“I played all four phases at Navy throughout my three years playing there,” he said via Steelers.com. “Special teams is something I take pride in, I enjoy doing.” He has served as the second-team personal protector on the punt unit, a role that involves directing blockers and signaling the snap.

At Navy, Heidenreich recorded 247 special teams snaps. He noted that tackling on coverage units provides an outlet he no longer has on defense. Teammates Travis Homer and Kaleb Johnson are also contributing on special teams during camp.

Heidenreich acknowledged the challenge facing any late-round rookie but emphasized his willingness to contribute wherever needed.
