Elina Svitolina withdraws from Bad Homburg Open with hip injury

Elina Svitolina has pulled out of the Bad Homburg Open after sustaining a right hip injury during her first-round match. The withdrawal comes five days before the start of Wimbledon on June 29.

The Ukrainian player defeated Liudmila Samsonova 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the opening round but required a medical timeout for the hip issue during the second set. She was due to face Xinyu Wang next but will now rest instead.

Svitolina, ranked world No. 8, announced the decision on Instagram. “Unfortunately, I will be pulling out of my quarterfinal match here in Bad Homburg,” she said. “Last night it was a hard-fought victory, but it took a little bit more than expected out of my body, so therefore I need a few more days to recover.”

She reached the quarterfinals at a grass-court event the previous week before this latest setback. Svitolina has not ruled out competing at Wimbledon but has limited time to recover ahead of the Grand Slam.
