Fäbodveckan in Dalarna highlights cultural heritage

Fäbod culture is celebrated with activities in Dalarna during Fäbodveckan running 12–20 July.

Fäbod culture has been recognized as living cultural heritage by UNESCO. The number of people practicing fäbodbruk is not increasing, which has led to the arrangement of Fäbodveckan with activities from Säter in the south to Idre in the north.

SVT reporter Emil visited Skräddar-Djurberga fäbod in Orsa to learn kulning. Annika Sahlén, a kulerska, said: ”I Sverige är kulning framför allt är förknippat med kvinnor men ute i världen är det vanligare med manliga kulare.”

Anna Hagström, chair of the fäbod association in Dalarna, stressed the importance of preserving the culture. ”Det är en kultur värd att bevara. Djurhantering på ett sätt som låter djuren röra sig fritt i skog och mark, och matproduktion utan beroende av el”, she said.

The week includes hikes and courses on churning butter to support the fäbod farms with tourism and increase knowledge.
