Former Afenifere scribe urges stronger collaboration against banditry

Basorun Seinde Arogbofa, former secretary-general of Afenifere, has emphasized the need for the Yoruba to defend their lands against bandits and terrorists. He made this call during the installation of Bakkita Bello as the seventh Olukoju of Odooko, Afa Okeagbe. Professor Abiodun Akinpelu backed the position, urging synergy to protect the region and strengthen the Amotekun security outfit.

During the installation of Bakkita Bello, the immediate past chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State and former Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, as the seventh Olukoju of Odooko in Afa Okeagbe, Akoko North West local government area of Ondo State, Basorun Seinde Arogbofa highlighted the importance of defending Yoruba lands. He argued that such collaboration would allow the Yoruba to protect their region effectively, given their unique knowledge of the terrain. The event took place over the weekend, marking the public reappearance of the town's sacred 'Amgbu' regalia, unseen since 1973.

Professor Abiodun Akinpelu from Lagos State University, who gave the keynote address, supported Arogbofa's view. He expressed concern over the insecurity in Yorubaland and called on traditional rulers and stakeholders to work together to safeguard the area. Akinpelu urged Southwest governors to build on the late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu's initiatives by properly funding and strengthening the Amotekun security corps. His speech, themed 'Royalty, Defence and Protection of Oduduwa Land', also advocated promoting indigenous languages to preserve cultural heritage.

Oba Mofolorunso Adegboyega Arasanyin, the Ajana of Afa Okeagbe, presented the staff of office and described the Olukoju title as a pillar of strength, courage, and steadfastness for the community. Bello, in response, pledged his commitment to promoting economic growth, political development, and peaceful coexistence. The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, represented by Fatai Atere, a member of the Ondo State House of Assembly, congratulated the community. Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by Commissioner Samson Akande, encouraged continued peace and unity for progress.
