Former lawmaker faces police questioning again over bribery

Former Democratic Party lawmaker Kang Sun-woo reappeared before police on Tuesday for questioning over allegations of accepting illegal political funds from a former Seoul city councilor. Having left the party last month to become an independent, this marks her second appearance following an initial session on January 20. Police intend to probe both the 100 million won cash receipt and donations of about 130 million won made under borrowed names.

Former Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Kang Sun-woo arrived at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Public Crime Investigation Unit around 9:30 a.m. on February 3, 2026, for her second round of questioning as a suspect in an illegal political funds case. She had left the party last month to become an independent legislator, following her initial appearance on January 20.

Kang faces accusations of receiving 100 million won ($69,000) in cash from former Seoul city councilor Kim Kyung in January 2022 at a hotel, allegedly in exchange for the party's nomination of Kim for the council seat. During the first interrogation, Kang claimed she was unaware of the cash inside the shopping bag handed to her by Kim. However, Kim and a former aide of Kang contradicted this in their separate police statements, asserting that she knew about the money. Kim resigned from the Seoul Metropolitan Council late last month.

Police also plan to question Kang about additional allegations that Kim donated approximately 130 million won to her under the names of several other people from October 2022 to December 2023. Kang has stated that she returned the funds shortly after discovering they were made using borrowed names.

Upon arrival, Kang apologized, saying, "I'm sorry for causing concern to the people," but declined to answer reporters' questions, including on her knowledge of the cash. This case highlights ongoing concerns over political corruption in South Korea.
