Gaël Monfils played his final match at Roland-Garros on Monday, losing in five sets to Hugo Gaston after 3 hours and 25 minutes.
The 39-year-old Frenchman fell to compatriot Hugo Gaston by a score of 2-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-0. The match took place on Court Philippe-Chatrier in front of Yannick Noah, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet and Gilles Simon.
Monfils took the third and fourth sets before losing 6-0 in the deciding fifth. He ends nineteen appearances at Roland-Garros, including a 2008 semifinal and three quarterfinals.
Gaston paid tribute to his elder’s influence on his career after the match. Monfils played the encounter as part of his final season on the tour.
