The German national team lost its final group match at the 2026 World Cup 1:2 to Ecuador. Despite the defeat, Julian Nagelsmann's side qualified as group winners for the round of 16.
Leroy Sané gave Germany the lead after 109 seconds. Nilson Angulo equalized in the 9th minute and Gonzalo Plata scored the 2:1 for Ecuador in the 77th minute.
Coach Julian Nagelsmann criticized the team's performance after the match. "Too much freestyle after the early lead," he said. Captain Joshua Kimmich stressed the need to reduce ball losses.
Germany will face the round of 16 on Monday in Foxborough near Boston. Deniz Undav remained on the bench again.
