The government on Monday selected a military airport in Gwangju as the site for a semiconductor production cluster. The defense ministry said it has yet to finalize relocation details.
Presidential chief of staff Kang Hoon-sik said at a briefing that the selection was made during a meeting between government officials and executives from Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to discuss follow-up measures for the investment project.
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have pledged a combined 800 trillion won in investments in the Gwangju and Honam region. Companies proposed the site because its 8.3 million square meters of already leveled land would shorten preparation time.
The defense ministry said it would cooperate with the Air Force to maintain military readiness. Muan county, the preliminary relocation candidate, has called for a review and national-level incentives.
The president plans to hold monthly meetings to review progress on the project.
