Japanese author Haruki Murakami is set to release a new memoir titled Abandoning a Cat: A Personal Story on October 20. The 80-page book will be published by Knopf and translated into English by Philip Gabriel.
The memoir expands on Murakami's 2019 essay of the same name that appeared in The New Yorker. It explores the author's relationship with his father in the post-World War II era in Japan and includes one of his signature cat stories.
Murakami's career began in 1979. This is not his first work of personal nonfiction. Earlier books include What I Talk About When I Talk About Running and the 2022 title Novelist as a Vocation.
The upcoming release marks another addition to the author's body of reflective writing.
