Jannik Sinner defeated Nuno Borges in straight sets during the second round at Wimbledon. The world number one acknowledged ongoing issues with match rhythm after another tight contest.
Sinner beat Borges 7-6(4), 7-6(2), 6-4 on July 1. He secured the first set in a tiebreak after failing to convert break points early. In the second set he recovered from an early break to win six straight points in the tiebreak.
The Italian said after the match that he still felt short of practice. “Especially the first match, I felt a lack of matches,” Sinner stated. “Also, today a couple of moments I need to get back to this rhythm.”
Sinner had already needed five sets against Miomir Kecmanovic in the opening round and suffered a fall that caused visible bleeding. He has not played any grass-court warm-up events this season.
He will next face American Jenson Brooksby, who holds an 8-16 record this year but has reached the third round at the All England Club.
