Large section of ceiling falls into Hong Kong estate's indoor pool

A large section of ceiling material collapsed into the indoor swimming pool at Lake Silver estate in Ma On Shan, Hong Kong, on Saturday. Fortunately, no one was injured as the pool was closed at the time. The facility has been shut down for a detailed inspection.

The Lake Silver Customer Service Centre issued a notice to residents, stating it had been informed by the clubhouse contractor that “material” had fallen from the ceiling of the indoor pool. Images show a large piece of debris partially submerged in the pool water. A resident said the pool was closed at the time of the roof collapse. The notice indicated the incident occurred on Saturday.

“Fortunately, no one was injured, and the indoor swimming pool is currently closed for a detailed inspection,” the customer service centre said. “[The] customer service centre and the owners’ committee are very concerned about this incident.”

The estate is located in Ma On Shan, and authorities are investigating the cause to ensure resident safety.

A 43-hour blaze on November 26 devastated seven blocks at Hong Kong's Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, killing at least 159 people and injuring 79. Preliminary investigations point to scaffolding between the first and second floors of one block as the likely starting point. As of December 7, 13 households remain uncontacted, with authorities not ruling out further deaths.

Hong Kong police have expanded their probe into allegedly fake scaffolding net safety certificates to six estates, following discoveries at two sites after the Tai Po inferno that prompted the removal of mesh netting at about 200 locations last week. The blaze on November 26 killed at least 159 people, including a firefighter, and left nearly 5,000 homeless.

Hong Kong authorities have ordered the removal of scaffolding nets at about 200 sites citywide following the deadly Tai Po fire, with firms starting work to meet a three-day deadline. Suspected false safety certificates were found at two building sites, prompting the measure to prevent repeats of the tragedy that claimed at least 159 lives.

Hong Kong police are investigating an attack and robbery in which a 25-year-old mainland Chinese man lost about HK$6 million (US$767,070) in cryptocurrency and silver. The incident was reported at 3.52am on Saturday, with the victim attacked by three men and a woman at a hotel near Man Lok Street in Hung Hom. The suspects later took him to a unit in an industrial building and seized silver items worth HK$1 million; no arrests have been made and a manhunt is underway.

Hong Kong police are investigating the death of a 66-year-old man who fell from bamboo scaffolding. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon at Nelson Street in Mong Kok, where he was found unconscious and later pronounced dead at a hospital. Initial probes indicate he climbed out from a flat in the building before losing his footing.

Hong Kong's development minister has stated there is no need for a complete switch from bamboo to metal scaffolding, as the former was not the cause of last month's deadly Tai Po fire. This position marks a shift from Chief Secretary Eric Chan's earlier remarks urging a swift replacement.
