The Ministry of Social Affairs plans to involve AKMIL cadets in training Sekolah Rakyat students. Lawmaker Sandi Fitrian Noor welcomed the idea but warned against any perception of militarization in education.
The plan aims to build discipline, leadership, nationalism and patriotism among students who mostly come from poor families.
Sandi stressed that character education must stay within humanist pedagogy. He cited international studies such as PISA and OECD showing that character formation works better through role modeling and positive relationships.
Commission VIII of the DPR is committed to ensuring that policies at Sekolah Rakyat serve the best interests of children. Sandi added that discipline must arise from awareness and responsibility rather than mere rule compliance.
