League of Legends Classic draws criticism over paid skins

Riot Games revealed League of Legends Classic, a recreation of early seasons that launches worldwide on July 29. Players on the public beta environment have already voiced strong objections to the requirement to pay for most classic champion appearances.

The mode features the old Summoner's Rift map along with removed abilities and items. Sixty champions are available at launch, but only a limited number of classic skins can be obtained for free through the Classic Path battle pass and Classic Progression Track.

Additional classic skins require purchase at 500 Riot Points each. Skins bought for the mode cannot be used in the standard version of League of Legends.

Community feedback on Reddit has been largely negative, with users comparing the approach unfavorably to World of Warcraft Classic and arguing that base champion models should not be paywalled.

Riot has indicated the mode will remain available long term rather than as a limited event, leaving open the possibility of future adjustments to animations and visuals.
