Actor Luke Grimes has revealed why a dinosaur bones mystery from Yellowstone's first season was never resolved. In an interview, he said producers and network executives rejected plans to revisit the plot in season 2. The storyline involved his character Kayce and son Tate digging up stolen bones.
In season 1 of Yellowstone, Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, and his son Tate, portrayed by Brecken Merrill, discovered dinosaur bones that were later stolen. The plot thread faded without resolution, leaving fans with one of the show's lingering mysteries from the Taylor Sheridan-created drama. Grimes addressed this while speaking to Radio Times, confirming intentions to bring it back in the season 2 finale. There were a lot of notes about the original Season 2 finale. It was finessed, and the dinosaur bones didn't make the cut, unfortunately, Grimes said. He attributed the decision to the politics of television production, involving multiple producers, a network, and a studio. The original plan had Kayce embarking on an adventurous quest, bouncing between trains to confront the thief. It was crazy. It was out of this world, Grimes described it. Studio bosses felt it strayed too far from the ranch-focused narrative, though he was excited about the idea. Instead, the season 2 finale showed Kayce and John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner, rescuing kidnapped Tate from a militia and confronting the Beck brothers. With Yellowstone now concluded, Grimes shared these behind-the-scenes details without concern.
