Madrid begins renovation of Chamberí square with 2.3 million euros

The Madrid City Council has announced the start of renovation works on Chamberí Square in early November, with a 2.3 million euro investment. This transformation is part of the 'operación plazas' initiative led by José Luis Martínez-Almeida to modernize key urban spaces in the capital.

Chamberí Square, a traditional spot in Madrid's district, will undergo a major overhaul starting in early November. The project, announced after the District Government Board meeting, involves reorganizing interior spaces, renewing paving with stone elements in gray and toasted tones, as well as updating urban furniture, green areas, and lighting with classic candelabras and Fernandino lanterns.

Key additions include a new non-transitable ornamental fountain with vertical jets and a square granite perimeter that doubles as a bench. Sculptural elements from the current fountain, such as the three bronze children, will be salvaged and relocated to nearby planters, alongside the statue of actress Loreto Prado in another. This will form a main landing for accessing the revamped square.

The music kiosk will receive a comprehensive refurbishment, preserving its historical character, and will be relocated to optimize the square's geometry and free up more space. The children's area will be redesigned into three distinct zones, each with specific games and surrounded by vegetation, including 14 new trees. Furniture will feature three-meter wooden linear benches and modular benches around the planters.

District councilor Jaime González Taboada voiced his approval: "It addresses almost all the requirements and concerns of the residents. It's not just a necessary work for visual reasons, but also for the sanitation it involves." The announcement was made alongside Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida and Deputy Mayor Inma Sanz. This effort is part of a program that has remodeled 35 squares with seven more in progress, coinciding with the planned rehabilitation of Jacinto Benavente Square in the first quarter of 2026.
