A 68-year-old man faces 71 charges after a carjacking and shooting rampage across Prince George's County that ended when he could not drive a manual transmission vehicle.
Larry James Simpson was indicted on Thursday on multiple counts of attempted murder, first-degree assault and armed carjacking, court records show. Authorities say the spree began around 2:30 p.m. on May 15 in College Park when Simpson shot at a 64-year-old man before stealing cars and firing at additional victims, including a woman and an off-duty police officer.
The rampage continued through Greenbelt and Riverdale, where Simpson flipped one stolen vehicle while speeding and later ran out of ammunition. He then took a third car but abandoned the effort after realizing it had a manual transmission and he did not know how to operate the clutch.
At least two people were injured during the incidents. Simpson, who had been convicted of first-degree murder in 1987 and released in 2022 under a special program, is scheduled to appear in court on July 10.
