Mercedes granted FIA hearing over Russell's Monaco GP penalty

The FIA has accepted Mercedes' request for a review of the Monaco Grand Prix result and George Russell's penalties. A hearing is scheduled for this Saturday ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix.

The FIA confirmed on Wednesday that Mercedes lodged a Right of Review petition regarding the Monaco stewards' decision. This follows Alpine's successful challenge that overturned Pierre Gasly's pit lane speeding penalties.

The hearing will proceed in two stages. Stewards will first assess whether Mercedes presented a significant and relevant new element unavailable at the original decision. If met, a second hearing will examine the substance of the challenge.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said during the Spanish Grand Prix weekend that the team would pursue the review despite low expectations of success. "We definitely have to give it a go if we see that there is a millimetre of chance," Wolff stated.

McLaren and Red Bull are also understood to be challenging the revised Monaco result, which reinstated Gasly to third place after a timing system error was acknowledged by Formula One Management.
