Mick Abel faces hitters in return from elbow injury

Minnesota Twins right-hander Mick Abel pitched live batting practice on Thursday for the first time since sustaining right elbow inflammation. He threw two simulated innings and reached mid-90s velocity on his fastball.

Abel faced hitters ahead of the Twins game against the Royals in Minneapolis. He threw approximately 37 pitches during the session. Just being able to have hitters in the box again, it feels really, really good, and really nice, Abel said after the workout. The body feels great, too, so I can't complain. Manager Derek Shelton noted the positive signs from the outing. I think it was 37 pitches, the velo was up to 96 or 97, so that's a good benchmark, Shelton said. Abel is scheduled for a re-evaluation on Friday to determine his next steps.
