Gijón photographer Jorge Villa, aged 38, died on Saturday after being hit by a car during the Rallysprint Carreño.
The incident took place shortly before 13:30 at kilometre 6 of the CE-2 road in the parish of Logrezana. A competing car left the track and struck the photographer, who was covering the event as a spectator.
The driver and co-driver were injured and taken to the Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias in Oviedo. The eighth edition of the Rallysprint Carreño, part of the Campeonato de Asturias de Rallysprint, was immediately cancelled.
Emilio Carrasco, sports director of the Federación de Automovilismo del Principado de Asturias, said security measures had been applied. "The security caravans passed and moved people from that site. No one should have been there," he stated. He added that it is impossible to control all spectator movements once the competition has started.
