Prabowo corrects IKN design by adding reservoirs to prevent fires

President Prabowo Subianto has corrected the design of the Nusantara Capital (IKN) to balance the hot climate in East Kalimantan by adding small reservoirs and anticipating forest and land fires. State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi stated that the President has asked the IKN Authority to pay attention to the area's function and design.

President Prabowo Subianto has provided design corrections for the Nusantara Capital (IKN), considering functions to balance the hot climate in East Kalimantan through the addition of small reservoirs (embungs), as well as anticipating the potential for forest and land fires (karhutla).

State Secretary Minister (Mensesneg) Prasetyo Hadi explained that the President has asked the Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN) to pay attention to the design and function of the IKN area. "For example, a certain area needs to have its design and function considered, for instance, the addition of small reservoirs. Because there, the climate issues are first, the heat, second, there is potential because it's an island region with lots of forests, there is also the potential for forest fires," said Prasetyo Hadi while providing a statement at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday (January 16, 2026).

Prasetyo Hadi added that President Prabowo has asked OIKN Head Basuki Hadimuljono to focus on the design to anticipate karhutla. Basuki reported methods for installing heat sensors in the IKN area to detect fire potential. "The OIKN Head reported that there are already several methods for installing those sensors, and he was asked to continue testing them," stated Prasetyo Hadi.

In a previous occasion in Malang Regency, East Java, on Tuesday, Prasetyo Hadi stated that OIKN and the Ministry of Public Works have been asked to make improvements and accelerate construction so that IKN as the political capital is ready by 2028. He mentioned that on the night of January 12, the President landed in IKN with ministers to receive a progress update from Basuki Hadimuljono, emphasizing facilities for legislative and judicial branches. "So, there were still several things where Mr. President provided corrections, first on design, second on function. OIKN and the Ministry of Public Works are asked to continuously improve," he added.
