Stan Wawrinka said he has no plans to coach in the near future once he retires from professional tennis. The three-time major champion made the comments at the Estoril Open, where he is competing on his farewell tour.
Speaking to reporters in Portugal, Wawrinka said he wants to avoid extensive travel after ending his career. “I don’t think I’ll be coaching next year or anytime soon,” he said. “That’s not what I want to do. I don’t want to travel too much. I want to keep things quieter, but in the long term, we’ll see.”
The Swiss player is appearing at the Estoril Open for the first time since 2013, when he won the title. He described the return as a positive experience. “I’m happy to be back in Portugal,” Wawrinka said. “I have amazing memories, especially winning the title here. I’m very happy and pleased to be able to play here one last time this year.”
Wawrinka, currently ranked outside the top 100, has relied on wildcards for entry this season. His strongest result came at the Australian Open, where he reached the third round. He is scheduled to finish his career at the Basel event later this year.
