Bharathiraja died in the early hours of June 10, 2026, at the age of 84. His films including 16 Vayathinile and Mudhal Mariyadhai brought southern Tamil Nadu villages to the screen. Actors Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and Sivakumar paid respects. Ilaiyaraaja said he prayed for the director’s soul to rest in peace. The Tamil Nadu Television Digital and OTT Producers Association suspended shoots for 12 hours from 6 a.m. on June 11. His work introduced rural stories and talents to wider audiences.
