Tamil Nadu sells surplus wind energy through exchanges

Strong wind energy generation has allowed Tamil Nadu to export surplus electricity to other states via power exchanges during June.

The state reached a wind generation capacity of 9,500 MW. Output crossed the 5,000 MW mark this month after hitting 4,500 MW in May. During the middle week of June, regular production reached 5,500 MW with nearly 1,700 MW generated between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Wind energy met more than 25 percent of peak power demand. Surplus output was sold through energy bourses. On average the state produced about 100 million units daily from wind and solar sources out of total consumption of 400 MUs, with over 60 MUs sold.

A senior official of the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited noted that the wind season typically strengthens in May. Data from the State Load Despatch Centre confirmed the renewable contribution and export levels.
